WOMENS PRELIMINARY FINAL 2022 – OLD BRIGHTON V OLD SCOTCH
August 7th 2022
Sunday’s Preliminary Final saw us come up against our traditional rivals Old Scotch for a spot in the Grand Final. We started the game brilliantly holding Old Scotch to just two points in the first quarter with Siena Scott and Chloe George starring in the back line. Kira Maass and Tahlee Aker provided great support holding our opposition’s stars to just a couple of possessions each.
Indi Tait and Annie Grant were providing plenty of drive around the ground as we started the second quarter in great style. We had two early goals on the board courtesy of some great work from Lucy Grant and Kitty Smyth with both Charlotte Ryan and Sienna Courtney getting plenty of the ball. Ruby Darmody’s courage was obvious as she battled hard in the ruck after suffering a broken nose in last week’s semi-final. With just seconds left on the clock, Lily Tait kicked a fabulous goal that put us seven points up at the main break.
The third quarter saw Scotch kick 1.4 to our 1 point with Sophie Grant and Sarah Egan playing at their elusive bests. Lucy Mitchell and Jas Tait stood their ground under immense pressure from Scotch’s repeated entries into their forward line and we went into the three quarter time break two points down.
Unfortunately, the last quarter saw Scotch finish right over the top of us kicking seven goals. We really missed some of our more experienced and mature players who were unfortunately unavailable due to injury or overseas travel. All our Old Brighton Women’s team tried their hearts out and can’t be faulted for their efforts.
Overall, the Women’s 2022 season was a great success with the introduction of 33 new players and the club fielding a seconds team for the first time. Many of these new players have played a lot of junior and representative football and have come to the club with a very strong skills foundation. As a club we can look forward to a very bright future for our Women’s football.
Go Tonners!!
