2020 Season Cancelled

A Statement from President Shane Young

To all of our valued players, sponsors and supporters.

It was announced last night after many weeks of deliberation by the VAFA that the season for 2020 has been cancelled and will not proceed due to the increase of COVID-19 cases in Victoria.

As President of the OBGFC it brings me no joy to hear of this decision, as from the end of last season many dedicated people have worked together in anticipation for the launch of this season. 

I wish to take this opportunity in acknowledging the positive and enthusiastic involvement of our playing group and that of our coaching staff. The behaviour of all of our playing group has demonstrated a maturity in dealing and adjusting with daily uncertainty and the ever changing advice given by authorities on training and forecast dates for the commencement of the season.

During this period, myself and the committee have been contacted by many of our loyal supporters who have asked or commented;
 “when is the season commencing?“
 “I can’t wait to get back to the club to watch the men and women play.”
 “I want to catch up with my mates.”
 “I want to enjoy the great lunches the same as last year.”

This personal experience and the continuous enquiries and comments, have highlighted to me just how important this club is to our community, and supports and justifies one of our key strategies of our 5-year plan; being Bayside’s number 1 community football club.

In speaking with Senior Coach, Greg Hutchison, immediately after the announcement, it is advised that Greg will work with all coaches and our player leadership groups to put together a plan to continue to train under the Victorian State Government, AFL Victoria, and Bayside council guidelines. The committee and our coaches will also work closely to ensure that all of the players welfare, and the continual connection and engagement with the club, is closely monitored for the remainder of this year.

You, the players, are and always will be our number one priority. I know many of you will be disappointed with the decision to not have a season of football, as there was a ground swell of enthusiasm by the group in looking forward to building on the success of 2019. Let’s not think of the negatives, let’s think of the positives of 2020 being an extension to preseason 2021, and for a time in getting our minds and bodies ready for being a year closer for all sides playing finals in 2021. 

During the 64 year history of this club we have faced many challenges, big and small, both on and off the field, but nothing as historical as this. In all instances and especially during this period, it is evident and admirable the positive fighting spirit of all associated with our great club.

I have spoken many many times that our club have and will continual to punch above its weight, and this year is proven testimony to this. Your committee and coaches are already planning for the success in 2021. Over the coming weeks and months we will be communicating new initiatives and upcoming events around the club for all players, sponsors and members to stay connected and engaged.

Finally I would like to sincerely thank the following people for their support and understanding shown to me during this trying and uncertain period.

John Rawlinson, David Paterson, Doug Dick, Corné Olivier, Jan Davis, Tom Clarke, and a special thank you and acknowledgement to Frank Cavallaro for his diligence, hard work and governance as our COVID-19 manager. 

Stay safe everyone, and I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our first function once this crazy period is under control.
