The Tonner Reserves won their seventh game and finished sixth after a strong performance against Old Carey in the last round of the season. With the forward line strengthened by the inclusion of Jake Turner and Ben Pryor, and Jack Rutter continuing to find his touch, the boys moved away from the Panthers in the second term and continued to build their lead in the second half.
Tommy Gunning celebrated his 200th game with his usual spirited contribution and a couple of goals. He has been a stalwart of the Club since starting in the Under 19s in 2005 and the boys worked hard to give Tommy a day to remember. Matt Freeman controlled the defence all day and even drifted down to cap off a fine display with a goal. Rutts booted four, Sam Murray and Harry Hynes worked hard, and Tommy Fisher kept up a supply of his 25- metre darts to leading forwards.
Luke Healy would be happy with the team’s improvement in the second half of the year. We didn’t quite have the depth to push for the finals, and Luke will hope that everyone turns up next year and plays with the commitment that Tom Gunning has given for so long. Matt Freeman led the defence, Charlie Hicks was terrific in the mid-field and captain, Cal Macleod always led by example. Marty Ho was rewarded for his efforts over a couple of seasons and he played the latter part of the season in the seniors.
