With the uni holidays still on and the schoolboys heading back to play school footy, numbers were really light on this week with only 19 playing. We have also had to contend with light training or no training due to the weather and the state of the ground.
We were playing Uni blues who we just knocked off by 2 points in round 1 and still the best team we have played all season. It was going to be tough, but we were up for the challenge and wanted to keep our lead on top of the ladder going. With only 1 rotation on the bench and missing players who generally play midfield we tried a few different combinations in the first quarter to get it right.
We started the game well but struggled to make it count on the scoreboard. Pushing Jake back forward with Trent Mailing forward and moving Tom Kenny to the wing had immediate impact with TK being a standout with his hard work both ways winning his own footy and linking up well. One of the smallest players on the field but one thing you can never question about both Kennys is they are fearless at the contest and will fight tooth and nail to win the footy.
With Hughes having supremacy in the ruck it allowed Finn and Dom to get the ball on the fly a lot around the stoppages and in tough windy conditions our running game was on top. We were able to kick away in the second quarter and maintain that margin the whole game as we lost Dom late and had to play the game with 18. It was a tough win under duress, but it shows we can step up to challenges thrown at us and we must continue to do this week in week out.
