With 16 out of our original 22 either injured or away we dug deep to find some new talent and knock out an unexpected second win of the season.

Making the trek out to Ascot vale to play against our rivals St Bernard’s, the boys knew we were in for an arm wrestle against 3rd on the ladder. Winning the toss and kicking with the wind in the first quarter put us on a good foot and we went into the first change 2 goals up at the snake pit.

Against the wind in the second quarter I asked the boys to hunt in packs and make it a messy game to disallow Bernard’s from using the ball on the outer, and we did just that. The boys in defence were under the pump for the 25 minutes but from some sheer brilliance from Funston, Karanicolas and Cochran, we managed to still go into the main break with a 1-point lead.

Looking at the radar at half time we knew that the rain was going to come harder and the wind to really cause havoc and keep the ball to the one side of the ground. No Runner or water boy for the game we moved the bench over the other side of the ground so we could be part of the game and make changes easier. As the wind picked up so did the boys’ intensity, pushing out to a 14-point lead at 3rd quarter time. We knew that wasn’t enough though and pushed even harder in the last quarter.

Against it in the last quarter we had to pull something special out of the bag and we did just that. The run from the McPherson twins and the four Under 19’s boys gave us that spark late in the quarter to run the ball down to the forward line and kick a goal against the wind to win us the game. Coming out 6-point victors against third on the ladder is a massive win for the boys and shows we can match it with everyone else. After the bye we have the two teams below us so we can hopefully add another 2 wins in the coming weeks.
