For whoever pencilled in St. Kevin’s to smash our boys on the weekend they would have got an almighty shock when they saw the score. St. Kevin’s sitting second on the ladder with one loss to Xavier they came in with big heads and were given a real wakeup call when our boys came out firing early in the game.
It was all about respect for our boys on Saturday and they did everything possible to earn what should have been given to them from the start of the season from everyone.
Being named a ‘fun’ team really hit hard for the boys and they showed that not only are they here to win football games, but they are also here to show everyone that it’s just a serious as every other team in the amateur football league.
We hit the scoreboard well against the wind in the first quarter which really set us up for a solid arm wrestle with the best in our division. Having those bigger bodies in the team really set us up in the middle of the ground, working closely with Bellmaine who dominated all day in the ruck. North, Ogilvie and Stewart were brilliant all day in what was a mud-heap of a centre.
The two teams were back and forth all day on the outer wing and both teams were struggling to break away from the other. Our backline lead by both Funston and Karanicolas were huge all day, winning most contests when needed, showing the blokes who haven’t played footy before just how it’s done.
Unfortunately, in the end we just couldn’t hold off St. Kevin’s, who managed to score a point with five seconds left in the ball game. To lose to another ‘development’ squad by just one-point shows that we can match it with those stronger teams. The wins are not far off for the boys and as soon as we get that first one, watch them come in quickly.
With players returning from injury and holiday, the best is still yet to come from the U23’s team. Another impressive effort by the boys who can all hold their heads high with how they are performing.
