Old Xaverians appear the players to beat in Premier Division, after they defeated us comprehensively in the fifth round of the season. The game was shifted to Xavier College to follow the APS match in which BGS held out Xavier to win by five points. The Tonners were unable to do the same.
Old Brighton was coming off fine victories over St. Kevins and Collegians, but five enforced changes disturbed the balance of the side which didn’t have the depth of class to match their opposition on the day. The Xavs were simply too good.
The first quarter was keenly contested. Our blokes matched the Xavs in the contests, the defence held and although Nick Pavlou’s fine long shot on the run was our only major for the term, we trailed by only three points at the first break.
Old Xavs then dismantled us in the second quarter, booting eight goals without a miss, and 9.4 for the quarter. Will Lewis kicked our only goal, when he turned his opponent and snapped accurately to provide brief respite. The home side was simply too fast and skilful, and we couldn’t, as they say, find the ball. Most of the time it was splitting the Xavs’ tall poles.
When play resumed, the Tonners fought hard and were able to score when Hamish Dick drove through a ripper and then marked strongly in close for another. Harry Hill, who desperately tried to lift his side, snapped a third from well out. The boys lifted well enough to hold Xavs to only three goals for the term.
The floodgates opened again in the final stanza, Old Xaverians kicking eight goals to three, to win easily.
