We ventured out to Southern Road Oval Mentone to play another undefeated team in St Bede’s/Mentone. Upon rocking up to the ground, I was thankful we did our preseason at Firbank because it was a very skinny small ground. The opposition only playing with 3/4 forwards and extra midfielders started well and their ball movement worried us a little, but we then lifted our pressure and started to defend the corridor better. They then with that pressure kept kicking it into their forwards where we kept the extras behind the ball because our mids led by Branson/Agius and Hughes had dominance. The second quarter we kicked away and if it wasn’t for some inaccurate kicking should’ve put the game to bed by half time. We picked up a few knocks and lost 3 players which left us with 2 on the bench. Bryson, Dom, Flynn and Mailing had to pick up the slack with Agius/Branson off and they did a great job. Jake in his first game was dangerous as always and our smart forward line was as always dangerous. The third quarter they came at us hard and started to use the outnumber at the stoppages well, however even with cleaner ball movement our defenders never got beaten one on one and our outnumber would bring the ball out with ease. It was a bit of a stalemate until Noske took It upon himself after Pryor went off injured to create a contest and was rewarded with a few goals. In the last we through some changes to get some players experience in certain positions and the continuing growth of Robertson, Middlemiss, Mailing, Bennett and Glennon to name a few is really for us showing the depth I didn’t think we had. Rounds 2 & 3 have been encouraging because everyone is playing their role and doing well. Hopefully this continues this week and we can go through 4-0 after Saturday.
