A beautiful Saturday morning at BBO saw the Under 19’s take on Uni Blues in the first game of a home day triple header.
We had 7 debutants and 17 players who had played last year. We went into the game not really knowing what to expect, having gone up 2 divisions after the VAFA restructured the Under 19 competition. Still, with the team we had selected we were pretty confident that we would be in with a decent chance of starting the year with a win.
Dominating much of the first half, but like last year, failing to capitalise in front of goal, we kept the blues in the game. There were patches of the first half where they got a run on and looked dangerous going forward. A few changes around the ground were made at half time and a few players lifted. We dominated much of the third quarter, but again, didn’t put it on the scoreboard and a few of our players’ lack of fitness started to show.
Thankfully, the boys dug deep in the last quarter and some smart time management by Bryson and Dec Adams in the last quarter also helped. Hamish Dick and Ben Branson played good games through the midfield and forward, both kicking multiple goals. Archie Perkins and Josh Duscher, both Year 11 boys, showed some polish through the midfield and did some exciting things, which is great news for Brighton Grammar this year.
Finn Campigli and Ben Pryor on the wings showed their class by foot, both kicking goals and setting us up well all day. Mitch Hughes and Will Agius were a very good combination in the midfield, which as the year goes on will only get stronger and be hard for teams to stop.
