MAZENOD OC: 7.5-47
OLD BRIGHTON: 8.7-55
Saturday August 11th – The under 19’s headed out to Central reserve on the most miserable day of this winter to fight off for top spot and a home final against Mazenod in a top of the table clash. Conditions not in any teams favour, so none of the boys were eager to get out and play footy. Warm up consisted of approximately 45 minutes of throwing ping pong balls into a bucket and only 10 minutes of ball skills before arguably the biggest game of our season. However, Tom Burns actually made it on time this week so we knew were in with a good chance.
The first quarter started off extremely tough for both sides with the ball being like a bar of soap to handle. Despite this we were able to stuff up our disposal a lot less than Mazenod did resulting in us dominating the quarter. Fresh from BGS’s first game on the Crowther in 476 days, Jake Turner provided us with a genuine tall target up forward crashing packs and Ben Branson came out guns blazing kicking two first quarter goals to give Old Brighton the lead of 3.3.21 – 2.0.12 at quarter time.
The second quarter was a back and forth grudge match resulting in minimal scoring until we switched off for 5 minutes resulting in some transition goals giving up our first quarter lead. If it wasn’t for Max Burt’s bully attitude and lethal left foot snap I fear we would have been down by a lot more heading into the break.
Much like the second quarter, the third was filled with miss-kicks and shanks until again when we shut off for 5 minutes and two questionable frees were paid in Mazenod’s forward 50 resulting in 2 late goals meaning we were heading into the last quarter trailing. At this point it was definitely clear that the boys would much prefer to have been rugged up in bed instead of out on the field. One thing I did notice this quarter was that despite the weather, Mitch Hughes had somehow managed to kick the ball in a perfect spiral more times than not throughout the game (there’s a first time for everything Hughesy)
The last quarter had been our quarter all year long, and we didn’t disappoint coming from behind to snatch an 8 point victory and top spot for 2018. All the boys stepped up especially to S.Larkworthy, D.Adams and again B.Branson for there clutch goal kicking to seal the win.
Honourable mention to the backline, specifically Joey ‘McGovern’ Micari and Ben Cochran for shutting out 1’s players and also to Tom Wallace who, believe it or not, had multiple hard ball gets and tackles this game!
Best players again were Burt, Hynes and Cochran clearly showing where Baz’s bromances lie for this year (In all fairness they were best on).
Goals: B. Branson 3, D. Adams 2, J. Turner , S. Larkworthy, T. Kenny
Best: M. Burt, B. Branson, H. Hynes, B. Cochran, S. Larkworthy, J. Turner
