OLD BRIGHTON: 5.14.44
OLD TRINITY: 5.12.42
Fielding 12 debutants and led by their newly appointed captain, Tom Wallace, the Under 19’s started the 2018 season by grinding out a 2-point win over Old Trinity.
In what was a low-scoring and scrappy affair, with neither side able to consistently maintain possession and drive the ball forward cleanly, Old Brighton trailed at every break, albeit slightly.
Max Burt, Harry Hynes and Tom Burns were influential in winning the contested ball, an area in which Old Brighton seemed to have the upper hand but could not convert into scores. Matt Harris looked lively up forward and was unlucky to hit the post on two almost identical occasions. Harry Osbourne performed solidly in defence before shifting forward in the 3rd quarter and battling hard to bring the ball to ground.
Coach Brian Randall’s 4th quarter move to place Nick Freeman on a half-back flank proved to be a master stroke, with his infectious dash and dare inspiring his teammates to similarly take the game on when it was all on the line.
With just 4 minutes left to play, Dec Adams dribbled home a goal to gain the lead, and from there the boys showed remarkable composure, considering their inexperience, to send numbers behind the ball and grind out a win for Old Brighton.
It was only fitting that when the siren sounded, the ball was in the hands of ruckman, Mitch Hughes, after clunking yet another mark. Hughesy provided a colossal target for 4 quarters and was clearly best on ground.
Congratulations to the following 12 debutants…
Mitch Hughes, Dec Adams, Max Burt, Paddy Inglis, Charlie Kenny, Tommy Kenny, Matt Speirs, Liam Farrell, Ben Cochran, Hugo Butler, Jackson Mahan and Xavier Pym.
